Not sure, but another product from that aisle, Canada Dry club soda, hasn't been available for a month or two. Stores just shove copious bottles of ginger ale into the shelf spot for club soda...
Wouldn't be a big deal, but the main alternative, Schweppes, isn't sold in most national grocers. Always seems to suspiciously be tonnes of stock of the garbage private label brands, too.
How can there actually be shortages of these products? It's just carbonated water.

I think there was a shortage of Orange Crush for a good while recently. Guess it happens nowadays.
Speaking of soft drinks, I had Muskoka Brewery's Ginger Ale the other day. That is real ginger ale, less sugary and more ginger taste, loved it.
c'mon get happy!

I've noticed 591ml bottles of Diet Pepsi out of stock at many stores in my area around London.

There’s SOMEWHAT of an APPARENT pop shortage
Spurred on by the fact there’s A REAL … Aluminum Can SHORTAGE
So manufacturers have been focussing their efforts on running primarily their BEST SELLERS on their production lines
beer-soda-can-shortage-2395743/
So less popular lines
Aren’t run as often
Therefore are harder to find
And sell out quicker (be that in cans or bottles)
The real shortage issue
Tho also impacts other lines (and costs)
As folks feel there is a shortage … just look at the empty shelves of the less popular lines
So they in turn fear that the shortage could become greater / affect them
So they buy even more pop in even the popular lines (affects all pop … cans or bottles)
It’s kind of like this is the current run on TP we all saw back in March 2020
Perceived idea … becomes a reality

There may be an aluminum can shortage but is there a PETE shortage which is what every non-glass bottle of pop is made from?

Not that I have heard of …
But folks see somethings they want to buy not available in cans (Diet Canada Dry Gingerale in our case)
So they switch to the 2 Litre Bottles
Then folks not informed about the aluminium can shortage
Come along see more empty spots on the shelves
(I’d say 2 to 4x as many as in previous years)
Find they cannot locate something like Diet Canada Dry in either cans or bottles
See even the other Diet Gingerales are also sold out
And supply is sketchy in other soft drinks
And then they panic buy …
So instead of buying just their regular supply of pop
They double buy
This in turn means more empty shelves
Next guy comes along … sees the same
Perceives the same issue
Also stocks up / panic buys
It’s EXACTLY THE SAME thing as the TP buying spree
Meanwhile … Stores cannot keep pop in stock to any great extent
So they cancel sales
And raise prices
I am paying 2 to 3x for pop I want now
Versus in 2019
Same thing happened with TP
Until folks cooled their crazy buying habits

These days every time there is a shortage the excuse is Covid...
You may have been to a grocery store and searched for a 12-pack of your favourite soda pop, only to come up empty-handed.
Like other dilemmas faced by Canadians since mid-March, the coronavirus pandemic is to blame, according to beverage peddlers.

If they’re nixxing production of a flavour in cans than any other containers will also be affected since they have to switch formulas.
