Is it easy to get a 5 on AP Chem? ›

Only about 10% of students make a 5 on the AP® Chemistry Exam, and you can too with the right combination of applied learning, great study habits, and deliberate practice.

However, you can generally expect to need approximately 70-80% of the total points available to earn a score of 5 on the AP Chemistry exam. It's essential to remember that each year, the College Board adjusts the scores to maintain a consistent standard of proficiency.

Usually, a 70 to 75 percent out of 100 translates to a 5. However, there are some exams that are exceptions to this rule of thumb. The AP Grades that are reported to students, high schools, colleges, and universities in July are on AP's five-point scale: 5: Extremely well qualified.

In 2023, a total of 139,448 students took the AP Chemistry exam. However, out of that entire pool, only 16.05% of students scored a 5. Meanwhile, 27.10% of students scored a 4, and 31.96% of students scored a 3. The average score for the 2023 AP Chem exam was 3.26.

As you can see, while at least 5% of test takers scored a 5 on each AP exam, the perfect scores are teeny, teeny, teeny percentages.

Getting a 5 takes careful content knowledge, targeted practice and dedicated studying. Only around 14% earn the top score for the AP® Statistics exam. To get a 5, start studying ASAP® and focus on applying concepts to specific situations.

So, how hard is it really? According to College Board (the makers of the AP exam), only around 19% of students are getting a 5 on AP exams, which may seem normal since you have probably seen many students get 5s. However, it is very important to take into consideration which AP exam you are taking.
